Anchuthengu, formerly known as Anjengo, is a coastal town in the Thiruvananthapuram District of Kerala. The word ‘Anjuthengu’ means 'five coconut palms', reflecting their pervasiveness. Anchuthengu has a beautiful and clean beach. Fishing boats parked on the hot sand and nets drying in the sun are worth seeing. Kaikara village, the birthplace of the famous Malayalam poet Kumaran Asan, is located nearby. The British East India Company established Anchuthengu Fort or Anjengo Fort in 1695 after the Queen of Attingal gave it permission to do so. The fort served as the first signalling station for ships arriving from England.
The fort was the East India Company's first permanent post on the Malabar Coast. It played an important role in the Anglo-Mysore War.
